Car Seat Safety

The firefighters of the Pueblo Fire Department are committed to insuring that children riding in cars are well protected in the event of a car crash. To that end, the firefighters, in cooperation with Drive Smart Pueblo, are working to help make children as safe as possible. We do that by offering the following services, all at no cost or obligation:
  • Car Seat Inspections
  • Installation Guidance
  • Product Recall Checks
  • Informative Literature
  • Training to other Organizations
  • Safety Checkpoints
    • Safety Checkpoints are not a law enforcement checkpoint, but rather are a means of making it convenient for parents to have their child safety seats checked. Safety Checkpoints are conducted at various locations around Pueblo. Low cost child safety seats are available at Safety Checkpoints.

Watch here for the next scheduled car seat checkpoints.

Remember, Colorado law (C.R.S. 42-4-236), effective August 1, 2003 says:
  • Children between the ages of 4 and 16 years are required to buckle up in all seating positions
  • Children under 4 years old and under 40 pounds or who is under 4 years old and weighs 40 pounds or more, are required to use an approved child safety seat in all seating positions
  • Children who are 4 or 5 years old and under 55 inches tall are required to be in a booster seat or restrain with a child safety belt
  • The law applies to children transported by child care centers, as well as privately-owned vehicles
  • The driver of the vehicle is responsible for ensuring compliance with the law
  • Offenses under this statute are a primary offense, which means drivers can be stopped and ticketed for violations of this law, even if no other violations exist
  • Any seat belt or child restraint system must conform to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards
  • Children are exempt from the child restraint system and seat belt requirements when:
    • A child is being transported in a medical emergency
    • Children are being transported in a motor vehicle built to commercial standards, such as a school bus.
